This Chinese nougat candy is beloved to eat in the Chinese new year. It is sweet, crunchy, and filled with roasted peanuts. It is only prepared with five items and can be cooked within 10 -15 min.

This is a candy which I usually love the most. As per the name, this is originated from China. It is called Niu Zha Tang牛轧糖’ in China.

What Is Nougat ?

Nougats are a type of dessert prepared with sugar or honey, roasted nuts (often almonds, walnuts, pistachios, hazelnuts, and macadamia nuts), beaten egg whites, and occasionally chopped candied fruit. Nougat has a chewy texture and is used in a range of candy bars and chocolates.

There is a tradition of giving a special candy box on lunars new year (on this day the people show their love and good wishes through candies) that is a “tray of togetherness,” a loving box filled with sweets and candies that represent luck, happiness, and good fortune.

It is also a Chinese milk candy because powdered milk is its main substitute. It looks and tastes similar to a vanilla tootsie roll.

This is so easy recipe that it can be prepared in under 10 minutes. The worst part of making this candy is waiting for the nougat to harden up enough to cut.

These candies are normally made with regular marshmallows but you can use vegan marshmallows.

For vegan instead of using regular powdered milk, you can use coconut milk the taste will be a little bit different. but they are worth your moth cravings.

How to Make Chinese Nougat:-

This Chinese nougat candy is beloved to eat in the Chinese new year. It is sweet, crunchy, and filled with roasted peanuts. It is only prepared with five items and can be cooked within 10 -15 min.

Main Ingredients:-

The main ingredient for preparing Chinese nougat candies are:-

200 grams of marshmallows. 40 gram butter
100 grams of milk powder. 100 gram cranberries.
100gram almonds.

Chinese Nougat candy recipe:-

  • Bake almonds at 160°C for about 10 minutes.
  • Take a nonstick pan and add butter, then cook over low heat until the butter is melted; occasionally stir with a nonstick spatula. Always use a nonstick pan.
  •  After melting down the butter, add marshmallows and stir until the marshmallows are about 80% melted.
  • Quickly stir the almonds and dried cranberries until the melted marshmallow fully coated all the ingredients.
  • Put everything into the nougat tray mold and press gently.
  • Now use the roller to fully fill the nougat tray’s mixed ingredients.
  • Cover the nougat with a piece of baking paper allow the nougat to set in the refrigerator for about 1 hour.
  • Turn the nougat onto a cutting board, cut the nougat into small rectangles, and wrap it in rice paper, baking paper, or candy paper so that they do not stick together.

Expert Tips:-

  • Regular marshmallows are too much sticky when we melt them. They can’t be easily removed from the bowl, so be assured to grease the bowl before melting the marshmallows. They can be removed from the bowl by scraping vigorously.
  • Instead of using regular marshmallows, you can use vegan marshmallows because they are less mushy and soft and don’t stick to the bowl as much. It is, however, more challenging to include peanuts and milk. The most straightforward approach to mixing the ingredients is to knead the confection with your hands.
  • The peanuts and milk powder must be immediately stirred into the melting marshmallow.
  • If you are not comfortable with peanuts, you can also use dry fruits with other nuts.
  • I recommend you choose the tiny marshmallows because the big one melts slowly, and it will take time.

How to Store Chinese Nougat:-

You can store them for up to 1 week in an airtight container box, and if you want to store them longer, they can be kept frozen for up to one month. But before serving, let them come to room temperature.
